BMW M Division has revealed a Concept M4 GTS at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Based on the current turbocharged M4 coupe, the GTS follows in the tyre tracks of the company’s previous special edition M models, which started with the M3 Evolution in 1988 and more recently brought us the very orange M3 GTS and the stealth looking CRT. The new M4 GTS is a lightweight, track-focussed road car, with a production version scheduled to go on sale in 2016.
The Concept M4 GTS – it’s more than a concept, BMW M will be building a production version of the car – showcases new technology, including water injection first seen on the M4 Moto GP Safety Car. This alone has resulted in an eight increase in power and torque, with the GTS’s 3.0 litre twin turbocharged straight-six expected to produce over 460bhp and nearly 610 Nm of torque.
The water injection system works by injecting a fine spray of water into the plenums of the intake manifold, when the water vaporises the intake air is cooled. As a result, the final compression temperature in the combustion chamber is reduced, allowing for a higher boost level and earlier injection timing for the engine.
Further still, to insure optimal operating temperatures across the board, BMW M has also developed a more effective cooling system for the turbocharged ‘six. Comprising of a main radiator there is now also additional radiators for the engine’s high-and low-temperature circuits, transmission and turbocharger in order to maintain consistent temperatures. The turbochargers are also cooled with an indirect intercooler and individual water pump.
With the M4 GTS BMW’s M engineers have focussed on developing a road car that’s optimised for the track. Therefore, the carbon fibre front splitter and rear wing are both manually adjustable to aid aerodynamic balance, and the bonnet is made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic to help reduce the standard M4’s 1595kg kerb weight. There is also a wider front air intake to optimise airflow and minimise front axle lift.
The 9.5 x 19 front, and 10.5 x20 rear forged alloy wheels wear a 265/35 and a 285/30 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyre respectively.
As well as the Concept M4 GTS’s obvious aerodynamic additions, the car also features OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) rear lights. The technology works by omitting a ‘full surface and homogenous illumination’, as opposed to the single point of light you get with a regular LED light.
BMW is looking to use OLED technology throughout its model range over the coming years.
Having made its debut at Pebble Beach this weekend, the Concept M4 GTS will appear at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Expect a production version of the M4 GTS to be in the showrooms by Spring 2016.
